"A man held a makework political job, polishing the cannon in front of the county courthouse. It kept him fed and let him put a little money aside, but he wasn't getting ahead in the world. So one day he withdrew his life's savings, bought a brass cannon --and went into business for himself." -- Robert A. Heinlein, The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress
The computer revolution has provided a wonderful "brass cannon" for those who want to get ahead in the world... but it can be a cantankerous beast to polish.
The Brass Cannon Project was created to help intelligent people who want to polish their own "cannon," by providing common-sense answers to their data processing questions.
Perhaps I'm an optimist, but I prefer not to call people "Dummies" or "Idiots" or "Compleat Morons," no matter how fashionable (or profitable) some publishers have found it to be.
We want to make the Internet even more useful, by helping intelligent people get past the barriers to entry. We want to help you make your own unique contributions -- because that benefits us as well.
The fruits of our first efforts are now available at the Hands On How To site.
Links to free and inexpensive packages that should be on every notebook or desktop PC, whether Linux or Windows.
NOCC is a lightweight, free PHP-based webmail client, available through SourceForge. I've contributed this short writeup on creating new "themes" for NOCC. The same principles apply to other packages such as Squirrelmail.
We have our own SourceForge project! SimpleshoPHP -- as the name implies -- is a very simple web store written in PHP. It has enough features to be useful but it's simple enough that someone who is just getting started with the PHP language can (we hope!) follow the provided documentation, install it, and even customize it.
